One of my favorite things to do is make up new outfits out of old clothes. I think this stems from when I was in college and on a really tight budget. Going to a private art college definitely motivates you to be more creative and step out of your comfort zone. I know I definitely did.
HOW TO MAKE NEW OUTFITS OUT OF OLD CLOTHES
This fall I decided not to buy any new shoes or jeans since I already have a lot and don’t wear half of it. I also broke my toe in September so shoes were definitely not on my mind.
When coming up with new outfits out of old clothes I like to think about two things; how to layer the article of clothing and what colors will it look best with. After that I try playing around with different textures.
LAYERING
Layering is a great way to spice up any outfit. It is definitely my favorite way to come up with new outfits. I like to look at all of my jackets and blazers and then think about what top will look great with it. In the fall and winter you can style your most loved turtlenecks under any blazer for an effortless chic look. If a sweater or top has a lot of pilling then throwing a blazer, cardigan or jacket over it is a great way to draw attention away from that.
If you are trying to style an older top you can layer it on over or under a dress for more coverage. This is a great way to wear a summer dress in colder weather. You can also layer on jackets and cardigans.
COLORS
Another go-to when styling clothes is to go monochromatic. I honestly prefer an all black look almost every day but an all beige, brown or white look are also great for those that don’t like a lot of color. You can go as bold or minimal as you want.
For a monochromatic outfit I like to pull a bunch of clothing from my closet and sort it by color into piles. From there it’s really easy to figure out what items to pair together.
SHOPPING TIP TO CONSIDER
When you go shopping try to stick to the cohesive color palette. What colors do you like wearing? What prints do you like? Once you figure that out it will be easier to make cohesive looks from items in your closet later on when you feel like you have nothing to wear.
However, I understand that not everyone likes neutrals so if patterns and bright colors are your thing then maybe consider clashing prints. I have seen incredible outfits on Instagram where people like to make their outfits clash and it looks amazing.
Remember that you don’t have to style old clothes with just old clothes. You can play around with new items as well and create as many outfits as you wish. Fashion is fun, so try not to stress too much the next time you’re struggling to style older clothes.
