TheRavenCycleSo I follow a lot of book accounts on Instagram and I had been seeing a lot of posts about The Raven Cycle series. Intrigued, I checked out the whole series at my local library. I read the books in two weeks, so I decided to do a review on the whole series rather than each book individually.

The Raven Cycle Series

From a really young age Blue Sargent was told that when she kissed her true love, he would die. Therefore, she tries to stay away from boys and most importantly The Raven Boys. (The Raven Boys are students from a local prep school.) However, Blue doesn’t stay away from boys and soon becomes friends with a group of Raven Boys in search of the Welsh King Glendower. The story starts there, but it’s not really a love story. There is a little bit of romance at the beginning and more towards the end of the series. I would say its more of an adventure / paranormal series that focuses more on Blue and her friends, Gansey, Noah, Adam, and Ronan looking for the Welsh King Glendower.

Psychics and Tarot

One of the things I really liked about this series is that it’s really different. For starters, Blue isn’t psychic but is the daughter of a psychic. Her whole family consists of all females who also happen to be psychic and do tarot readings. I don’t think I have ever read a book that has physics or even mentions tarot. I absolutely loved that about this book series.

Character Development

Character development was really interesting because I don’t think that each character went through a major change. The biggest transformation for me was with Adam. His character went through so much mentally and emotionally. Without giving too much away- his character comes from a different background than the rest of The Raven Boys and even Blue. He goes through struggles that a lot of kids unfortunately go through.

Another character that went through some change throughout the series was Ronan. His character is quite a complex one. He comes from a privileged family but he has a lot of internal struggles. I really liked that his character took some time to confide in his friends. I felt like his character did things on his own terms, and I really liked that.

The plot wasn’t my absolute favorite but I still enjoyed reading the series. Overall I think that The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater is a good series for those that are looking for something new and different to read. I give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
