Your go-to guide to the dark academia aesthetic.
Lately I have been seeing so much dark academia style posts on Instagram and Pinterest and I have to say I am absolutely loving it. If you’re not familiar with the dark academia aesthetic it’s kind of like a mixture of Harry Potter meets the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Sounds beautiful and magical right?
Well if this style calls to you then you’ll be pleased to know that I am here to show you how you can achieve the whole dark academia aesthetic that’s totally on trend right now.
This post is all about how you can achieve the dark academia aesthetic.
Dark Academia Elements
Color Palette
For color palette I would say stick to darker and neutral colors. This of course is personal preference. The colors I would say to go for are black, brown, maroon, dark green, off – white and grey. Dark plums and forest greens work wonderfully with this academia style.
However, the most trendy and popular color is brown. I have seen so many monochromatic brown outfits online. To make your outfits stand out a little bit more think about the different textures of the clothing items you’ll be wearing and maybe include something with a checkered or plaid pattern.
Tops
Long sleeve tops are the way to go with the dark academia aesthetic. Long sleeve turtlenecks or mockneck tops are a good option. The turtleneck in particular is a fantastic option since you can layer it under a chunky sweater or cardigan.
Having the turtleneck pop out of the sweater from the top will look super cute! Trust me.
Other great top options are blouses and button – down tops. You can layer with these tops as well. For example, a vest would look really stylish layered over a button down top.
Bottoms
Go-to bottoms for this look are skirts, pants, and trousers. You can go for a solid color but if you want a print then plaid is definitely the best option. Anything with stripes or a checkered print would work beautifully as well.
Outerwear
Really great layering options are blazers, cardigans, vests, trench coats and leather jackets. Again, I would say stick with darker colors like dark brown, black or grey.
Shoes
Nothing quite says dark academia aesthetic like loafers and flats. For a darker and edgier option you can go for boots like Dr. Martens. This is definitely my go to option.
Knee high boots also work really well with skirts.
Accessories
Accessories are a great way to complete a look. Headbands, belts, sheer tights, backpacks and cross body bags are the perfect dark academia accessories.
Makeup
As far as makeup I would definitely suggest sticking to a more natural look. One of my favorite makeup looks is natural makeup look with a bold lip. However, you can also go for a very dramatic look. It’s all up to your personal preference.
Let me know how you feel about the dark academia aesthetic. Do you love it? I think part of my love for this style has to do with the fall vibe it has going on, which you can also easily incorporate to your wardrobe year – round.
I am also loving the light academia style so keep an eye out for a future guide on that. In the meantime you can check out my previous post here.
