cozy books to read

Editing this reading list down to under 20 books was incredibly hard but somehow I managed to keep this list short. In the fall I specifically like to read a lot of mystery, suspense and fantasy books so that is what I will be focusing on for this blog post.

In no particular order here are my top cozy books to read this fall.

THE BEST COZY BOOKS TO READ THIS AUTUMN

THE NIGHT CIRCUS BY ERIN MORGENSTERN

The Night Circus (ad) is truly magical. This book is mysterious, it has magicians, circus life, and romance. This is a story about to magicians who have been training their whole lives to compete against each other. However, it’s not that simple since only one of them can survive in the end. It is filled with so many dark and mysterious twists and turns. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is the perfect magical and mysterious fall read.

THE SILENT PATIENT BY ALEX MICHAELIDES

The Silent Patient is an incredible psychological mystery novel. It’s a novel that will constantly have you asking “why?”. This book is a multi-perspective book which follows the patient Alicia Berenson who is put away for murdering her husband, and her psychotherapist Theo Faber.

I really enjoyed this as an audiobook; it’s filled with so many twists and turns.

THE WITCH’S HEART BY GENEVIEVE GORNICHEC

The Witch’s Heart is a book beautiful novel about witchcraft, love, heartache and betrayal. This story follows a witch named Angroboda who was recently burned alive because she refused to tell the god Odin about the future. Then she meets Loki and a few other interesting characters which I will not tell you about because I don’t want to give away spoilers.

The Witch’s Heart has mythology in it, so if you like reading books that have gods and goddesses in them then this is one to check out. This is another book that I absolutely loved in audiobook form.

SHARP OBJECTS BY GILLIAN FLYNN

If you haven’t heard of Gillian Flynn then you are in for a real treat. Sharp Objects is by far my favorite Gillian Flynn novel. This story follows reporter Camille who returns to her hometown to report on two recent murders. It’s a thriller that is hard to put down, and is also slightly disturbing- especially towards the end. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn is a book that will constantly keep you guessing.

Another great thing is that once you are done reading this book you can watch the miniseries on Hulu.

GONE GIRL BY GILLIAN FLYNN

Gone Girl is an amazing physiological thriller. It is filled with twists and turns and so much mystery. This story follows Nick who’s wife goes missing. As the story progresses Nick is highly criticized by the media for his behavior. The story slowly starts to get more and more twisted. It’s a brilliant book that will honestly leave you thinking “WTF?!”.

If you enjoy the book and wish it were a movie then you are in luck. You can watch the movie on Hulu.

THE CRUEL PRINCE BY HOLLY BLACK

The Cruel Prince (ad) by Holly Black is perfect for those that love fantasy and faeries. This YA book follows Jude who’s parents were murdered when she was a child and now has to live with her parents murderer and her sisters in the world of the faeries. This YA book follows her as she and her sisters try to find their place among the fey.

It is the first book in the Folk of the Air series. This book has magic, drama, dynamic familial bonds, and a hint of court life. This is a great book to read in October.

ADELE SHARP MYSTERY SERIES BY BLAKE PIERCE

If you like murder mystery and suspenseful books then the Adele Sharp Mystery Series might be for you. It follows Adele Sharp who is an FBI agent and is hunting down serial killers.

I have read the first two books in the series and I can honestly say it’s a keep you on the edge of your seat kind of series.

THE HAUNTING PARTY BY LUCY FOLEY

If you are looking for another murder mystery then you might want to check out The Haunting Party by Lucy Foley. This story is about a group of friends who go away for Christmas break and one of them ends up dead. This is definitely a whodunit type of book.

NIGHT HUNTRESS SERIES AND NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD BOOKS JEANIENE FROST

If you love vampires then you will love Jeaniene Frost’s books. More specifically I think you will really enjoy The Night Huntress series, and in addition The Night Huntress World books which are spinoffs to The Night Huntress series.

The Night Huntress series starts off with Halfway to the Grave which follows Cat Crawfield who is a half vampire who hunts vampires. Jeaniene Frost’s books are filled with action and a lot of romance. These books give off just the right amount of spooky vibes for October without actually being scary. The Night Huntress series is truly addicting.

DARK ELEMENTS & HARBINGER SERIES BY JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

The Dark Elements books are kind of like the prequel books to the Harbinger series. I didn’t know this when I read the Harbinger series first, so if you are going to read this then consider reading The Dark Elements first.

The Dark Elements follows Layla a half demon, half gargoyle trying to find her place among the Warden gargoyles who raised her but also hunt demons. If you like Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments books then you might really like this series.

ALPHA GIRL SERIES BY AILEEN ERIN

Looking for something with werewolf’s, witches and vampires? Then the Alpha Girl series is for you. This series follows Tessa a teenage girl who has visions. Tessa struggles to fit in so when her family moves to another state she is looking forward to fresh start. However, soon after moving there she gets bitten by a boy who just so happens to be a werewolf. This is a fun YA series with a lot supernatural and romance.

HARRY POTTER SERIES BY JK ROWLING

I can’t make a fall reading recommendation blog post without mentioning Harry Potter (ad). I personally think Harry Potter is the perfect book for every season but that’s just me. If you have been living under a rock and have never heard of Harry Potter then just trust me and start reading it.

This series is about a boy named Harry Potter who is raised by his aunt and uncle after his parents were murdered. When he’s eleven years old he finds out he’s a wizard and attends Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. It’s the most magical read for fall.
